Trotsdale Library Turkey Day Lyric Writing Contest
mini contest
Open to the public.
Deadline: November 30, 2015
Hello Trotsdale, Derpyland, Nisa, Exmoor, Ibex Empire, Ponyland, Pony Town, Luskwood, Astrid Sector Alpha, Project Catfort, and all of Second Life at large.
This month over here in the Trotsdale Library we'll have a contest playing with lyric/poem writing. Why? MORE TURKEY DAY MUSIC! The Christmas tunes are already taking over some places. Skipping straight to Hearthswarming and Yule makes the year go too fast!
Solution?
Turkey Day (AKA Thanksgiving). Setting aside the people coming and eventually taking over a land from the former occupants and having been rather unprepared for living in a place totally different than what they were used to. Setting aside political things. Focus now... Testing the waters with this one in preparation for our larger December contest.
Steps:
1. Think about being thankful for what you've got. Pumpkin pie. A harvest. Food in the pantry. Making it through all of those October festivities relatively in one piece. Those leaves that turned all those great colors and the bonfire you might have had. Hot cocoa on the porch with your friends under the starry night. Turkey... or a vegan substitute. Think about what sums up this time for you, or what you hear about it from buddies that celebrate it.
2. Now... check out this stuff for some idea pump priming:

3. Write your own lyrics to these songs. If you don't want to be contraitned then feel free to just go it comepletely from scratch cadence wise then go for it. Use the above examples as a springboard to make a carol for this mini-season. (Heads up, we may be revisiting the idea of lyrics for Hearthswarming). If it doesn't quite fit the cadence don't worry too much. Just get as close as you can. Is it singable? Is it fun? That's what we're wanting for the judges.
4. Put those lyrics of yours in a notecard. Title your song. Put your name in. When it comes to songs, the spelling counts. Otherwise someone might say the wrong word. Do your best, and don't be afraid to have a friend proof read for you. That's different than doing it for you. The better we can read it the happier we are and the better your lyrics look.
4.5. (NOT REQUIRED) If you feel really brave then record yourself singing or get a recording of a friend sining your carol. Post it on www.soundcloud.com (you can get a free one). Put a link to your recording in your notecard.
5. Once you've gotten it all cleaned up and pretty then drop your Turkey Day Carol in the dropbox. Please label with your -legacy name- and "Thanksgiving lyric contest." Locations are going to be at the bottom of the card.
6. Do your happy dance. Don't worry if it looks silly. Ame's is probably sillier. Actually there are people that know for a fact I look a lot odder than you doing the happy dance.
Prize:
Since this is a mini-contest before the big one I'll have two spots. There will be a first prize for "serious" *Raikou holds up a picture of a very serious looking Ibexian emperor... but her daughter Ashe has apparently scribbled a very silly moustache over the scowl* or traditional types. There will also be a prize for the funniest/funnest. Depending on the amount of entries and total prize pool at the end of the contest there might be a runner up.
Dropbox Locations:
Q: Amehana, why are there sometimes so many dropbox locations in the contests?
A: Some people prefer to stay in certain sims and rarely leave. Others might not have visited or known about some of these great places and so now have a heads up about them. And then there is just the idea of helping promote circulation around.
Q: I'm not all that sold on the prize offered this time. It seems a little low, and I'd like to see some other things offered than just money.
A: Pop me a note on prize ideas, and if you're someone that wants to donate a prize to add to what is already being offered or for a future contest that's an option too.
Q: This contest doesn't grab me. I'm not a good writer.
A: There are other contests coming. There are different types of things to write, and there will be art contests. Likewise another group associating with us, Project Catfort/ASA, and having some common members as the library group is going to be running another photography contest for December. If you have a contest idea then hit me with it (gently, I break).
